Long-term paracetamol use in pregnancy may increase child’s ADHD risk

Chiropractic Treatment and Pain Management During Pregnancy

When in pain, we often turn to medication.  During pregnancy, doctors have long recommended paracetamol (acetaminophen, Tylenol®) as generally safe, and certainly safer than NSAIDS (aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen). A recent study shows that what the authors describe as “long-term” paracetamol use during pregnancy may put your child at greater risk of an ADHD diagnosis. Instead of medication, you may want to consider chiropractic treatment, which offers safe, effective relief for many of the aches and pains of pregnancy without the dangers of medication.

Our Chiropractor in West Hartford specializes in treatment options for pregnant women that not only relieve many common prenatal aches and pains but can also decrease the stress of labor and delivery by aligning the body’s musculoskeletal system. Chiropractic differs from over-the-counter pain medications by offering only benefits during pregnancy.

Paracetamol/Acetaminophen and ADHD: What are the Risks?

A study in Norway, published in early 2017, found that children whose mothers had taken paracetamol for 29 or more days during pregnancy were more than two times as likely to be diagnosed with ADHD as children who were exposed for less than 29 days. While paracetamol use of 1 to 7 days showed little difference in the rate of ADHD diagnosis, as the length of time the mother took paracetamol increased, so did the rate of ADHD.

The study, part of the Norwegian Mother and Child Study, included more than 112,000 children, of which 2,246 were diagnosed with ADHD. While the researchers found an association between paracetamol use and ADHD, they could not say with certainty that paracetamol caused the ADHD.  Taking a cautious approach during pregnancy, you should discuss the use of paracetamol and any other medication with your physician. At the same time, you may want to discuss chiropractic for some of the normal aches and pains your body can experience during the stresses of pregnancy.
